For my career day, I shadowed a lawyer named Joni Eisenstein. We started the day by going to the Vista Courthouse. Joni is a defense attorney. She had a few items of business to take care of before I was able to see an ongoing trial. I met a DA and a judge, who both knew Joni very well. Joni studied at Washington & Lee University, getting a degree in Law. She said that the things that helped prepare her most for the job were having internships during college. She first interned for an investigator and then moved on to being an intern for the Alderson Prison Project and the Government Accountability Project. Everyday, Joni has to interact with clients as she is a representative for them in a court setting. Due to her having a private practice, she is able to control her own schedule. She is always fighting for integrity. I saw this when she was standing before a judge and spoke with great confidence. The most important rules for being a defense attorney is having the ethics of being a lawyer and having a sense of consciousness, meaning that the clients always come first. No case is alike another, which requires constant research. The laws are always changing so it is very important to always be on top of the current laws. I loved this career day because Joni is a literal life changer. She is the one who is trying to prevent someone from being locked away. I greatly admire Joni's confidence and work ethic. When she walks into the courtroom, she owns what she says. I would definitely consider this as a junior year internship.
